Tony was recently appointed into a Global Executive role at American Tower Corporation, based in their offices in Munich, Germany. In this role Tony will be the Global Head of Strategic projects and process excellence; focusing on cross regional strategic initiatives driven by Group that are critical to the business strategy and to our customers. ATC is a Global Fortune 500 Company, provider of wireless communications infrastructure. They are the leading independent owner, operator and developer of wireless and broadcast communication real estate and offer solutions and services to deploy and support wireless networks in 25 countries across 6 continents with a global portfolio of 219,000+ sites.


Tony previously held the position of CIO for the EMEA region (Middle East, Europe, and Africa). He maintained this role for 7 ½ years and was based in their Johannesburg offices in South Africa. He led the IT organization in its day-to-day IT operations enablement, execution and delivery of change initiatives from multiple merges and acquisitions and IT Strategic projects landscape across the region (from 3 countries 8,000 sites to 12 countries 50,000 sites).


Tony is a Senior Global Executive with strategic, operational & execution specialist knowledge and broad experience in many avenues ranging from both business transformation to merges and acquisitions, largely in the Financial and Telecommunications Sector. Tony has managed numerous large complex cross-border portfolios, He has strategically derived Business, I.T, Digital Strategies, and driven their effective execution in all aspects from Operations and Compliance to process efficiencies, Innovation and integration within Retail/Corporate Banking and Telco infrastructure, tower deployments and operations across the globe. He has managed work-streams within the Barclays-Absa merger and acquisition in 2006, leading strategic alignment. Once appointed as CIO for ATC South Africa in 2014, he led the IT Portfolio for the American Tower-Airtel Acquisition and integration in Nigeria in 2015, the ATC/FPS Tower France Acquisition in 2017, the Telkom assets acquisition in Kenya in 2018 and in 2020 the $2 Billion Acquisition of Eaton Towers across Africa and the Middle East for American Tower. He was recently and is still currently involved in the ATC acquisition of Telxius Towers from Telefonica (a $9.4 billion investment with a portfolio of 31,000 communication sites across Europe and LATAM in 2021).


Tony also holds the position of Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (rated number one Business School in Africa and in the top 50 globally) on a suite of programmes (including the MBA, PDBA, PMD, MPHIL, open and custom programmes). He is passionate in the fields of Digital Sociology, Digital Disruption, Technology Strategy, Effective Execution & Project Management, Strategic Project Leadership, Process Excellence, I.T as a strategic business enabler, The Art Of Innovation and Information and Knowledge Management. August 2021 marked his 10th year of teaching for GIBS Business School.


Academically, Tony has completed two degrees at Bond University (Australian based), the first in BIS (Bachelor of Information Systems) and the second in B-COM Marketing. In 2008 he completed his Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) through GIBS Business School and an Executive course in Building National Competitiveness through GIBS & Harvard Business School. In 2016, Tony completed the Innovative Technology Leader (ITL) Executive Program through Stanford University Graduate School of Business in San Francisco, U.S. He completed his Executive Education in Boston in 2018 at Harvard Business School in Competing on Business Analytics and Big Data. Tony is also an accredited PRINCE2 Practitioner, is MSP certified and has done studies in strategic project management applications, business process optimisation, Agile, Lean manufacturing and is passionate in the field of effective execution and I.T strategic implementation.


Tony frequently participates as a guest speaker and facilitator to numerous conferences and events across the globe that focus on ICT Strategy, Business Digitisation Strategy, Information Technology Enablement, Execution Strategy and many more. In 2015 he was a Keynote speaker at the Argyle Executive Forum: CIO Leadership Event at the Harvard Club in Boston with the Topic: I.T as a Strategic Enabler. In 2017 in Mumbai India, he presented for the Trescon CIO Show on "the Transformational CIO" and What is real Business Intelligence. In 2018 he was invited by the South African National Treasury to speak on and facilitate a session for the Jobs Fund Learning Forum on the topic: "Job Transitioning in the digital age: Building capabilities - The role of individuals and leaders". Tony attended IT Leaders Africa Summit in Cape Town in 2018 where he presented on the topic “Monetising Data” and in 2019 “The Transformation role of the CIO”. He was recently one of the guest panel speakers at the 2021 BCX annual XCITE virtual tech conference speaking on the topic: “Digital Resiliency”.


Tony is a Member of PMSA (Project Management South Africa) and a member of the CIO Council of South Africa. Tony has been featured in the CIO Directory for the past 7 years. This directory is a guide to the country's IT decision-makers and features the profiles of over 200 chief information officers and IT directors from top South African private and public sector organisations.
